Falun Gong emerged in China in 1992 as a qigong practice, and quickly gained widespread support throughout the population, thanks to enthusiastic support from the Chinese government. However, by 1999 it had become targeted by the Chinese government for suppression, and branded a cult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
